Rumor: Harley Quinn’s Solo Movie Is Coming In 2019
August 16, 2016
We are now a week out from the release of Suicide Squad and it would seem that although critics and fans hit the movie hard, it has managed to soar at the box office. The latest DC Extended Universe offering not only broke August box office records, surpassing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but it broke a Tuesday box office record as well. It appears that no matter what people say, Suicide Squad, just continues to smash its way through.
Criticism aside, there has been one question on everyone’s mind sinceSuicide Squad was released; are we going to get a Harley Quinn movie?Rumors first hit back in May that Margot Robbie had successfully made the case for a solo Harley Quinn movie and that it was in development. Unfortunately, we haven’t heard too much about the project since then.Robbie herself even said during the Suicide Squad press tour that she was still trying to make it happen. Now with the mixed reception ofSuicide Squad, and continued complaints against studio input on the DCEU, a lot of us are questioning if we’ll see Harley’s movie at all.

However, let this be a lesson that we should never doubt the internet, as new rumors have surfaced that Harley Quinn’s solo movie will be the untitled 2019 DCEU film.
Should Harley Quinn Get A Solo Movie?
Margot Robbie was hands down the shining star of Suicide Squad. Her performance as the “Queen of Gotham City” has probably been the biggest success taken from the movie (at least as far as the characters go). It doesn’t sound like Margot Robbie wants to be done playing this character, either. If this all comes true, we should see more of her, at least by 2019.
For me personally, I think it would be a shame to not expand on Harley Quinn as a character. Not only has she skyrocketed in popularity (which equals studio dollars), she is a rather complex character and there is a large library of material they could go with. Not to mention a chance to expand on the severely underused Joker played by Jared Leto.
What Is The Current DC Extended Universe Schedule?
The 2017 chapter of the DCEU will give us Wonder Woman and Justice League Part One. 2018 is where things get a bit crowded, as the studio increases the lineup from two movies to three with The Flash, Aquaman, and an untitled DC film project. It’s been rumored that the 2018 untitled project will be Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie, but there is no confirmation yet. If it is the Batman movie, that will be a major opportunity to bring back Jared Leto and Margot Robbie. That is, if they want Batman’s main villain to be the Joker. We were also introduced to two additional Batman villains in Suicide Squad, so we could see reprisals from Killer Croc and/or Deadshot. Batman’s movie might also be a prequel prior to Suicide Squad, showing the Joker’s murder of Robinwith Harley Quinn as his accomplice, but that’s just another rumor.
2019 is another triad year, as we have Shazam, Justice League Part Two, and another untitled DC film project. If the untitled project is going to be the Harley Quinn solo movie, it will serve as the finale for the year afterJustice League Part Two as it currently holds a November 1, 2019 release date. Whether or not a Harley Quinn movie would replace a Suicide Squad sequel is still unknown, but we don’t know if Warner Bros. will add another project for 2020 or more projects in 2021. It would appear that Warner Bros. is putting their stakes in a single character rather than the entire squad.
Is 2019 Too Far Away?
I don’t doubt that the popularity surrounding Robbie’s performance will remain strong and I don’t think the character will be forgotten, but I will also admit that three years could be a bit of a stretch. Especially seeing how we won’t get anything even related to the Suicide Squad from now until then — unless the characters make cameos in any films between now and 2019 (Captain Boomerang for The Flash, anyone?). If the 2018 project is the Batman movie, it would be smart to have cameos from Robbie and/or Leto just to keep their characters relevant.
However, this could also be DC’s way of continuing to try and compete with Marvel. As it currently stands, Marvel is set to debut their first female-led film with Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019, before all of the DCEU offerings for that year. What better way to respond to a female-led film by revising an even more popular female character that people are dying to see more of?
I think this is an interesting move by Warner Bros., but I think the studio might finally be using logic in the wake of what happened with Suicide Squad. For me personally, I think Suicide Squad just hit at the wrong time and it will be interesting to see how they utilize the story and characters in the future DCEU films. I would have put Wonder Womanahead of Suicide Squad, but this is why I don’t work for Warner Bros.
Again, I also think it’s a possibility that Harley Quinn will squash a Suicide Squad sequel, but there is no way to know for sure just yet. Also keep in mind that this is still just a rumor as nothing has been confirmed, but I think I can speak for a lot of us when I say I hope this is true. Harley could also take the 2018 slot and push Batman to 2019.
